The trial reaches its final stages, in court in Sassari the death of Carlo Dessole , who died due to an aneurysm in March 2018 . Nine doctors are accused in the proceedings and must answer to charges of manslaughter for the disappearance of the pensioner, who lost his life following the surgical operation.

According to the accusation, supported by prosecutor Paolo Piras, there was "negligence" because the operation was not carried out urgently. And yesterday it was the turn of the spontaneous statements released by some accused doctors such as, among these, the then director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic Eugenio Martelli . The professional reported on what "urgent surgery" means and on the fact that it would not have made sense to operate on the man on Saturday, when he was still well , and that, he recalled, "he had only begun to become symptomatic on Sunday evening".

"If following this process - declared the professor - this surgical team was held responsible we would necessarily have to work to change the global guidelines for the management of this pathology". And he then concluded: «Mr Judge, I therefore believe I can affirm that everything has been done, truly everything possible and humanly required within our national health system ».

Doctor Maria Antonietta Casu , present in the department that day, retraced, moment by moment, the steps taken as soon as Dessole showed the first symptoms, between CT scans and tests, up until the operation, working every minute. «The question I've been asking myself for 5 years and 9 months is this - he stated - what did I delay in? In the first, in the second phase? What more could have been done? I think that only those who undertake this job can know how complicated and difficult it can be to do all this, you are racing against time. I reject the accusations ."

Doctors Franco Piredda and Gianfranco Fadda then also spoke, justifying their actions by assuring that they had worked according to "what the medical literature prescribes" .

Judge Claudia Sechi postponed the trial to February for an interlocutory hearing before the discussion of the prosecutor and the civil party scheduled for April 2024.
