Two men were arrested at dawn today by the Carabinieri as part of an operation against cannabis trafficking between Sardinia and Northern Italy. The arrests, carried out in Illorai and Porto Cervo, are part of an investigation launched on May 12 by the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Cagliari, which aims to dismantle an organization active in the production and distribution of drugs on a large scale.
A 23-year-old with a criminal record, resident in the province of Bergamo but domiciled in Porto Cervo, and a 40-year-old, also a criminal, originally from Illorai, ended up in handcuffs. Both were reached by a precautionary custody order in prison issued by the GIP of the Court of Cagliari, after having already been questioned as part of the changes introduced by the "Nordio" reform.
Investigators believe that the two arrested had a key role in the management of the entire supply chain : from the cultivation and initial processing of cannabis to the logistics for transport on the peninsula, with particular reference to the province of Bergamo as the privileged point of arrival.
The investigations have revealed a well-structured system, capable of setting up decentralised and easily dismantled plantations in the Sardinian hinterland .
The investigation stems from the seizure of over 1,200 cannabis plants in September 2020. From there, investigators were able to reconstruct the entire production circuit, revealing a turnover that would allow for potential expansion into other areas of Northern Italy.
The two arrested were transferred to the competent penitentiary institutions for the territory, pending the decisions of the Judicial Authority.
