A series of checks at restaurants and fishmongers in Cagliari led to the discovery of untraceable fish products, resulting in fines and seizures.
The operation was conducted over the last ten days by the Coast Guard in collaboration with the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service (SIAN) of the Cagliari Local Health Authority, with the aim of verifying compliance with regulations on labeling, traceability, and hygiene and sanitation protocols (HACCP).
At an Asian restaurant near Largo Carlo Felice , officers found 75 kg of tuna, salmon, and prawns without traceability requirements. The establishment was fined €1,500 and the product was seized.
During a check at a city open-air market, a street vendor was caught selling vacuum-packed bivalve mollusks and bottarga without labeling or traceability . Fines totaling €3,000 were imposed and 7 kg of products were seized.
Another restaurant located on the seafront between Cagliari and Quartu was found with 104 kg of untraceable fish.
Sian staff issued two fines of €1,000 each, one for failure to comply with HACCP protocols and the other for inadequate hygienic conditions in the storage of beverages. In this case, too, the products were placed under administrative seizure.
Joint operations between the Coast Guard and Sian will continue in the coming days to ensure widespread checks throughout the territory and prevent the sale of non-compliant seafood, food fraud, and violations of hygiene protocols.
