The voices of the cigar makers are heard again, 120 years after the May 1906 uprisings. The Department of Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism of the Municipality of Cagliari has announced a music competition designed to revive an important chapter in the city's history: that of the female tobacco workers, a symbol of women's emancipation and shared struggles.
"The cigar makers," an official statement reads, "were protagonists of a period of protests that profoundly affected the social fabric of Cagliari . United, courageous, capable of transforming their working-class daily lives into a collective gesture of dignity, they left a legacy that still speaks today of rights, work, and identity."
The competition, organized in collaboration with the Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina State Conservatory of Music, is aimed at emerging young musicians and composers. The aim is to stimulate new forms of expression, encourage experimentation, and offer a showcase for those building their artistic career.
The top three works will receive a cash prize provided by the Municipality of Cagliari. Applications for "Il canto delle cigaraie" must be submitted by April 30, 2026. All information and the Municipality's announcement are available on the Conservatory's website.
