Positive balance sheet for Arnas Brotzu , which closes 2023 with 33 thousand patients hospitalized and discharged in the two Cagliari hospitals San Michele and Businco. The data, provided by the Arnas health activities control service, directed by Anna Maria Corriga, although provisional, are indicators of the importance of the company for the entire regional health system. The data becomes more significant if we consider that 10,145 hospitalizations in the entire Arnas , ordinary and daytime, equal to 31%, came from other regional and extra-regional health authorities .
Businco , with a total of 8,145 patients discharged in the past year, confirms its role as a regional reference center for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological pathologies , and the figure of 35% of patients outside Cagliari confirms this. San Michele , 24,860 patients discharged with a figure equal to 29% outside Cagliari, is the regional reference center for transplants , which closed 2023 with important numbers . This was confirmed by the director of the local Donations and Transplant Coordination, Antonio Manti : 76 transplants, of which 7 hearts, 30 kidneys and 35 livers as well as two combined (liver-kidney), for a total of seventy-four transplant recipients and 31 donors. To which are added 34 corneal and 74 marrow transplants (adults). Finally, the access data to the adult and pediatric emergency rooms should not be forgotten: 41,935 for the first and 20,943 for the second, for a total of 62,878.
In the year just ended in the Businco Oncological Radiotherapy department, directed by Raffaele Barbara, there was the precious renewal of the technological equipment which will allow us to increase effectiveness and reduce side effects in order to improve survival and the quality of life of cancer patients , for the benefit of the entire island territory. «An investment that will allow us to reduce waiting lists and extra-region mobility of cancer patients», comments the director of Anrnas Agnese Foddis. The new linear accelerator LINAC (LINEar ACcelerator) VERSA HD was inaugurated in November, a cutting- edge in anti-tumor therapies . The revolution will also continue throughout 2024: the new accelerator will not operate alone, it will have a twin that will be active starting from March . In February Businco Radiotherapy will also be able to make use of the contribution of Helical Tomotherapy, which will allow the treatment of all types of tumors and will allow all the most modern Radiotherapy treatments to be carried out, in line with the most advanced oncology centers in Italy .
Finally, in July 2024 , the planned technological modernization plan will be concluded with the operation of the Cyberknife, capable of satisfying the care needs of the entire regional territory. This radiotherapy technology, which exploits robotics and artificial intelligence, will be the only LINAC of its kind in Sardinia, extremely versatile, and will allow the mobility of patients to be reduced, or even eliminated, towards other regions. An incessant work and a significant result for the entire regional territory that Foddis attributes «to the impeccable professional skills of the over three thousand employees who, every day, provide their work, contributing to consolidating the professionalism of the Company».
These are the same human resources who, however, suffer from a notable disparity in economic treatment compared to their colleagues from other regional healthcare companies, because they are paid lower amounts : the inequality is such that it has led to differences of over 90% in performance pay between the medical managers of Arnas and their colleagues of the ASL , at the same level and tasks. The general director took charge of the widespread discontent , both among healthcare personnel and among administrative staff, who sent, in December 2022, the regional health councilor, Carlo Doria , the invitation to «take note of the just demands of the staff and to fully standardize the economic treatments of all the employees of the various companies of the regional health service, guaranteeing the Arnas resources the right remuneration".
The appeal did not fall on deaf ears: on the initiative of the member of the Council, the Regional Council approved law 1/2023, which provided for the allocation of resources for the equalization of the contractual funds of the staff of healthcare companies, amounting to 10 million euros (art. 5 paragraph 14). But the 2023 Stability Law was partially challenged by the national government, as it was deemed illegitimate due to some provisions that exceed the competences attributed to the Sardinia Region by the special statute. In particular the art. 5, paragraphs 14, 19, 20 and 21: the equalization intervention in favor of Arnas workers would present, according to the Government, aspects of unconstitutionality. The Constitutional Court's ruling on the case is awaited.
