According to reports, the Ministry of Justice has renewed the 41 bis regime - the harsh prison regime - for anarchist Alfredo Cospito, held in Sassari prison.
The measure was expected by May 4 and was notified today to defense attorney Flavio Rossi Albertini.
In recent days, the prisoner had been denied access to books and CDs: despite the approval of the surveillance court for the delivery of the material, the prison , the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) and the Ministry of Justice have appealed to the Supreme Court to oppose the concession.
Among the books requested by the anarchist were "God Plays Dice with the World" by Giuseppe Mussardo, "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, and "Ghost Story" by Peter Straub. The music CD is "2 Who Let the Dog Out" by the Lambrini Girls.
Cospito is serving a 23-year prison sentence for the attack on the Carabinieri barracks in Fossano in 2006 and for terrorist acts linked to the actions of the Informal Anarchist Federation (Fai-Fri).
The defense can appeal the ministry's decision to the Rome supervisory court. In September 2025, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the anarchist's lawyers' appeal, calling it "manifestly unfounded."
Cospito is also the protagonist in the case that led to the first-instance conviction of former Undersecretary of Justice Andrea Delmastro for having reported to his party colleague and vice president of COPASIR Giovanni Donzelli—who then made the information public in the Chamber of Deputies—the content of conversations that took place during exercise time in the Sassari prison between Cospito and Camorra and 'Ndrangheta inmates, also under the 41-bis regime. In Delmastro's second-instance trial, the prosecutor requested his acquittal: the verdict is expected in May.
