Extremely worrying signals regarding Ryanair's winter schedule from Alghero-Fertilia Airport. The alarm was raised by Michele Pais, a council member for the Northern League, who denounced a still partial but, in his view, already critical picture.
The opposition representative points the finger at flights loaded later than at other airports, only domestic connections, no international routes, and weekly frequencies that would drop from 22 to 9.
"With these numbers, the airport can't sustain itself," Pais states, pointing out the unresolved dispute between the airline and the regional government over compensation for the municipal surcharge on boarding fees. This issue, according to Pais, risks presenting the Alghero airport with a very high price.
The fear is of a significant downsizing, with direct effects not only on mobility within the region, but also on employment and the entire economic system of Northwest Sardinia. Pais even speaks of the risk of a social catastrophe, drawing attention to the airport workers and the families who depend on airport operations. "Concrete, strong, and decisive action is needed. We cannot continue to chase emergencies."
