The commemorative ceremony in memory of the 14 miners who lost their lives 87 years ago in the Sirai mine, precisely in the Pozzo Schisorgiu construction site, took place this afternoon in the parking lot of the Lidl supermarket in Carbonia. Commemoration also for all the victims of mining work.

The event was organized by the association Amici della Minia chaired by Piero Agus. The aim was to remember a tragic event that occurred on October 19, 1937. Coincidentally, on the morning of the same day, the head of the Government Benito Mussolini signed the decree of birth of the youngest Municipality in Italy: Carbonia was inaugurated on December 18, 1938.

It was 10:50 PM when a large explosion occurred during the detonation of mines in the IV beam n 3 construction site of level +40, located practically under the square that houses the supermarket parking lots. Francesco Ballocco, Antonio Pilia, Venerando Pireddu, Francesco Buonafede, Giuseppe Sais, Egidio Giacometti, Francesco Roda, Mario Barroi, Luigi Pistori, Silvio Serventi, Emanuele Meloni, Mario Rondelli, Primo Biagini and Salvatore Floris lost their lives in the explosion.

Only 8 miners managed to save themselves, including Antonio Canè, only 15 years old. The association would like to point out that although almost 90 years have passed since the tragic event, there is still no indication on site that commemorates the sacrifice of these workers that preceded the birth of the city of Carbonia. The Amici della Minia association will continue to do everything possible to achieve a dutiful recognition for the victims of mining work.

The ceremony, during which a bouquet of flowers was laid in memory of the miners, was attended by Don Gianpaolo Cincotti, parish priest of San Ponziano, the municipal councilor for social services Paolo Moi, Matteo Sabiu delegate Cgil Rsu Carbosulcis and the former mayor Antonangelo Casula. A commemorative mass for the victims of the tragedy was held later in the church of San Ponziano
