The osprey returns to Tavolara more than sixty years after its last nesting.
The announcement was made by the management of the Marine Protected Area, led by Leonardo Lutzoni, who announced that, in March, during some monitoring activities, the organization's staff detected two pairs.
"To highlight the importance of the areas subject to strict protection, the two couples have chosen to settle within Zone A and near the military base of Punta Timone", the note reads, "confirming the role that areas where the presence of man is strongly limited play for conservation, precisely to let nature take its course and reduce disturbance to a minimum".

Furthermore, one of the couples used an artificial nest, positioned several years ago, as part of a collaboration between the Marine Area and the regional park of Corsica, promoted, at the time, by the Municipality of San Teodoro, through the Icimar Association.
English: «This species feeds on fish and its return also tells of the interdependence between land and sea, testifying to the richness of the waters around Tavolara, as highlighted, for years, by the monitoring of the reserve effect, which certifies the presence of more fish and larger fish in the fully protected areas of the MPA”. Testimony to the protection work in the Marine Protected Area “Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo”, the couples who have chosen the island as their home are part of a regional panorama that has seen the species, for several years now, nesting also within the Regional Natural Park of Porto Conte – Marine Protected Area of Capo Caccia – Isola Piana, demonstrating once again the value of the network of regional protected areas, which protects an incredible heritage of biodiversity, also thanks to the support and policies of the Regional Department for Environmental Protection of the Sardinia Region. The return of the elegant birds of prey was achieved "also thanks to the project started by the Maremma Park, in collaboration with the Regional Park of Corsica, with the intent of spreading the knowledge once again. the species in its historical nesting areas. The project was later extended to numerous partners and to the protected areas where the osprey has returned to nest, expanding conservation activities and collecting very important data on the biology of the Mediterranean population, also through the possibility of following individual birds over time, equipped with identification rings and reconstructing their movements with the help of GPS».
