A simple yet meaningful gesture in one of Sardinia's most evocative locations. Tomorrow, a "Siste Viator" stone—a symbol of rest, remembrance, and journey—will be dedicated to Pope Francis on the summit of the Sanctuary of Gonare.
An initiative of the association "Il Cammino di Bonaria", which made this commitment on the day of the Pope's passing, to honor his figure and his deep connection with the Way.
Whoever climbs to Gonare will now find the image of Francis carved in granite: a living presence, who will continue to accompany pilgrims on their journey of faith, under the gaze of the Madonna.
The ceremony will be held in the presence of the mayors of Orani and Sarule, Marco Ziranu and Maurizio Sirca, and will be officiated by the parish priests Father Fabio Ladu and Father Gesuino Corraine. Volunteers, friends of the Cammino, and those who that day, September 25, 2024, heard Pope Francis's words in front of St. Peter's Square will be present: a special greeting that ignited the project. The Cammino di Bonaria owes much to Pope Francis: his words have been a guiding light since the project's inception. His invitation not to confine oneself to the palace, but to "take to the streets," connecting with others, inspired the vision of the Cammino as a place of encounter and a tool for inclusion.
Today, the Cammino di Bonaria has already won the hearts of many pilgrims. It is walked by children, students, adults, people with significant physical abilities, and others with disabilities. It is a journey open to all, marked by hope and friendship.
