He will no longer feel different; he will finally be able to experience school like all his classmates. A nine-year-old boy, deaf since birth, who attends a city school, will soon receive support to participate and understand lessons. This was decided yesterday by the judge, who ordered the municipality of Oristano "to comply with the Educational Plan by guaranteeing the child twenty-nine hours of sign language assistance per week." This is exactly what the parents had requested of the municipal administration, given that the IEP states that 30 hours are required to guarantee the right to education for a child with severe hearing loss. A sad story, but one with a happy ending.
Two months ago, the parents decided to entrust the matter to lawyer Francesca Macis, as the municipality consistently insisted that the funds were insufficient to activate the service. On October 10th, the lawyer sent the first formal notice, requesting the immediate activation of the service. The second, given that there has been nothing in the meantime, dates back to the end of October. And since the issue was not resolved after Social Services Councilor Carmen Murru declared on October 31st that "the family's request was being examined by social services," the lawyer filed an appeal with the Oristano court. A ruling was issued yesterday.
Attorney Macis: "At the hearing, the Municipality stated that it had surplus funds yet to be used, so the issue of the lack of budget funds was completely baseless. We must hope that the Municipality will voluntarily comply with the judge's decision."
