«The latest Istat data on poverty signal a collapse for Sardinia: 10% of absolute poverty and 18% of relative poverty».

The ACLI raised the alarm after the release of the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics (which also signals a clear demographic collapse for Sardinia)

«In Sardinia - the Acli highlight in a note - the incidence of relative individual poverty is equal to 20%, a figure higher than the 14.8% in Italy, and much higher than the 9.2% in the North, at the 9.9% in the Center, and only slightly lower than the 25.3% in the South."

Things are no better for the relative family poverty figure, where Sardinia is sixth in terms of percentage of families living in relative poverty, with 15.3%, compared to the 10.9% of the national average.

More generally, at a national level, «the numbers confirm that poverty in Italy increased by 0.6% between 2021 and 2022. The cause of this increase is identified in inflation, generated in part by the increase in energy and then by the subsequent failure to control food costs (not all caused by a similar increase in transport costs but by widespread speculation). On the islands, the number of families in absolute poverty went from 9.2 to 9.8% of the total, while those in relative poverty went from 17.4 to 17.9%.

«These data – comments Mauro Carta president of Acli Sardegna – do not surprise us: the 2023 data from the SWG-IARES survey show that 22% of residents in Sardinia declare a worsening of their personal situation compared to 2021, with 30% in the area Cagliari metro. 36% of Sardinians, but 42% in the Cagliari Metropolitan Area, say they are dissatisfied with their financial situation . And we have seen that over three out of 10 Sardinians are worried about the loss of purchasing power, unemployment and economic development on the island."

«It is necessary – adds Carta – that the government and the region do what they can to combat inflation and to resume serious programs to combat poverty: not just occasional interventions but structural responses that families and individuals are aware of to be able to rely on in times of need."
