"The Economist" crowns Italy "Country of the Year".

"It has changed" thanks to Mario Draghi, "a competent and respected premier at international level" - reads the reasons for the choice of the weekly in English - and it cannot be denied that "it is better than a year ago".
Praised is the new government led by the former president of the European Central Bank, in office since February 13, who seems to be able to manage internal conflicts in the executive better than his predecessor, Giuseppe Conte.

There is "a majority that has buried differences in support of a program of profound reforms" in view of the Recovery funds and an economy that is recovering better than the French and German ones.

The growth prospects for this year foresee an increase in GDP of more than 6% .

However, the magazine warns of the possibility that the premier could be elected head of state in January: there is the "danger that this unusual explosion of governance could undergo a reversal" if Draghi went to the Quirinale, "a more ceremonial assignment" , giving way to a "less competent" premier.

Also in the past months "The Economist" had praised Italy, citing the sporting triumphs at the last Olympics, the Maneskin victory at Eurovision and the Nobel Prize in physics awarded to Giorgio Parisi but also the success of the anti-Covid vaccination campaign , among the elements that favored the recovery.
