" Pecorino Romano PDO is produced only with the milk of Sardinian sheep and milked in the pastures of the island".

This is the appeal launched by the Agricultural Studies Center and by the shepherds without flags , who in 2019 started the wave of protests to request the recognition of a fair price for sheep's milk in Sardinia.

The proposal will be brought on December 9 to the Consortium assembly, called to deliberate on the modification of the cheese production regulations.

"Today in the field there are three distinct positions: the first that would like to leave the specification as it is, without any changes (today it is allowed to transform sheep's milk into DOP from any breed, as long as the sheep grazes in Sardinia). second, which would like to insert a 'tolerance' of milk from other indigenous breeds, while the third is that for the use of only milk produced by Sardinian sheep. And it is this last position that we ask that the assembly adopt ", declared Tore Piana of the Agricultural Studies Center.

According to the CSA, the issue "is going almost unnoticed by the Sardinian agro-pastoral world and by the entire Sardinian political class and in particular by the Regional Councilor for Agriculture, Gabriella Murgia, who has not yet expressed any opinion or line on the subject ".

The Centre's position is also supported by shepherds without flags. "We agree, it should be remembered that during the milk protest all the tables were asked loudly that the milk intended for the Roman is solely and exclusively produced by Sardinian sheep. At a time when the market is responding positively with pecorino romano, precisely because it comes from milk produced by extensive farms, we try to put sheep from intensive farms in the middle: we will defend our milk as in 2019 and as then we ask that we return to a consortium that must protect our milk , not the interests of a few ", explained Gianuario Falchi, one of the movement's spokespersons.
