The first Ita flight in Sardinia arrives in Cagliari on Sunday 15 May at 10.20 am and leaves again for Fiumicino at 11.05 am. A debut for the company born from the ashes of Alitalia which for the first connection chooses the aircraft dedicated to a symbol of the island, the Cagliari bomber of the Gigi Riva championship.

A double important news for Sardinia. In the airports of Alghero, Cagliari and Olbia an Italian company is revised, and the 12 months of subsidized flights for Sardinians depart on May 15, without economic compensation and therefore without disbursement for the Region's coffers.

Ita Airways had in fact expressed an interest in assuming the public service obligations, for one year, without taking advantage of exclusive rights and without receiving a euro. A challenge on the Sardinian skies launched at Volotea which until 14 May had won the 7-month tender to manage the continuous connections between the three island airports and the national hubs of Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate.

The response of the Spanish low cost was not long in coming. Volotea immediately relaunched by committing to operate continuously and without compensation until May 14, 2023, but only its two island ports, that of Cagliari and Olbia.

The two companies have agreed on slots, frequencies and times. But there was no lack of controversy over tariffs , and they are not over yet. If for residents the ticket costs are controlled, for non-residents there is the free market and the prices are very high , especially in the peak weeks of the summer.
