The first half of Lazio-Cagliari was scoreless, but both teams had chances: the main ones came from Marušić on one side and Folorunsho on the other.

Cagliari confirmed their 4-3-1-2 formation, with Palestra switching flanks and playing on the left . The first quarter of an hour was uneventful, save for a shot from Prati following a blocked corner (4') that went over. In the 15th minute, Gaetano released Folorunsho on the left, but his right-footed shot was weak and Provedel saved easily. Esposito, however, failed to capitalize on a rebound in the 20th minute; the ball reached him on the edge of the box and he fired with his left foot: way over.

Gaetano's stomach problems forced Felici to warm up, with the number 10 remaining on the pitch, despite not being at his best. Meanwhile, in the 27th minute, Lazio took a corner with a short pass and Cataldi crossed low: Palestra, sliding, intervened and avoided problems. But a minute later, the Biancocelesti came close to taking the lead, with Zaccagni getting away from Zappa and crossing back for Bašić to fire a left-footed shot just over the bar . A similar situation arose in the 30th minute, with Lazzari breaking away on the right for a low cross that Zaccagni turned wide.

Lazio picked up the pace midway through the first half, and in the 31st minute Marušić also had a go, but Caprile did well to dive and curl his right-footed shot into the corner, denying him the 1-0 lead. This was the Biancocelesti's best chance of the first half, while Cagliari had a big one in the 43rd minute. Following an Esposito free kick, a melee broke the deadlock in the box, Folorunsho gathered the ball, and Provedel blocked it. The ball returned to number 90, who tapped it in behind for Luperto, whose left-footed shot was blocked .
