The meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Volodymyr Zelensky lasted about half an hour. The Pontiff received the Ukrainian president in audience at his residence in Castel Gandolfo.

During the cordial conversation, which focused on the war in Ukraine, the Holy Father reiterated the need to continue the dialogue and renewed his pressing hope that the ongoing diplomatic initiatives could lead to a just and lasting peace . Furthermore, he made reference to the issue of prisoners of war and the need to ensure the return of Ukrainian children to their families.

"I invited the Pope to visit Ukraine. This will be a strong signal of support for our people," Zelensky said on Telegram after the meeting. "Ukraine greatly appreciates all the support of Pope Leo XIV and the Holy See: the constant humanitarian assistance and the willingness to expand the presence of humanitarian missions. I informed the Pope about diplomatic work with the United States to achieve peace. We discussed further efforts and the Vatican's mediation for the return of our children, abducted by Russia ."

As he was leaving this morning, Leone also wished the Ukrainian president a "Merry Christmas." At that point, even more emotional than he had appeared while sitting at his desk and later during the traditional exchange of gifts, he replied, "I truly hope so," accompanying the phrase with a clenched fist, as if to give himself strength. The two conversed in English, the Pontiff's native language.
