Tragedy during the night on the Milan-Turin railway line, in Brandizzo , about a kilometer from the station in the direction of the Piedmontese capital. A convoy overwhelmed a group of workers: five died, two others were unharmed. The driver is in shock, after being examined by ambulance personnel he was sent home.

From what was reconstructed by the carabinieri, the train carrying a dozen wagons was traveling at 160 km per hour and the workers - employees of a company in Borgo Vercelli - were busy replacing a few meters of track.

The railway police and the carabinieri of nearby Chivasso are at work on the scene of the accident, coordinated by the Ivrea prosecutor's office, for which the prosecutor Giulia Nicodemi is present. Ambulances and firefighters were mobilized for relief.

The victims are Kevin Laganà, 22, originally from Messina, residing in Vercelli; Michael Zanera, 34, from Vercelli; Giuseppe Sorvillo, 43, originally from Capua but residing in Brandizzo; Giuseppe Saverio Lombardo, born in Marsala but resident in Vercelli; Giuseppe Aversa, 49, from Chivasso.

"RFI expresses deep sorrow in the face of what happened and extends its condolences and closeness to the families of the deceased workers", reads a note from the Italian railway network (RFI).

«From news I received from the workers present, there seems to have been a communication problem between the team present on site and whoever was supposed to coordinate the work. But it will be the judiciary that sheds light on what happened», explains Paolo Bodoni, mayor of Brandizzo. "Today our thoughts go to the families of the children involved - he adds - this is a tragedy for our entire community".

«I wanted to be here immediately, as soon as I heard. Moreover, today we receive the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella (visiting Torre Pellice, in the Turin area, ed), in Piedmont, but it was important to be here first, first of all to express our pain. It is a huge tragedy, which affects the entire Piedmontese community. We have five people who have lost their lives, all five from Piedmont. Above all, we are talking about a fact that is unacceptable, because one cannot lose one's life at work". So governor of Piedmont, Alberto Cirio , arrived in Brandizzo.

The mayor of Vercelli, Andrea Corsaro , will declare the city's mourning for the three Vercelli victims: «We are dismayed in the face of such a tragedy - declares the mayor -, the scourge of accidents at work is dramatic. Citizen mourning testifies to how astonished and dismayed the citizenry is in front of a dramatic event of this magnitude. The company is known and appreciated for its seriousness in its work».

«I express my deep condolences to the families of the five workers who dramatically lost their lives tonight in the train accident that took place in Brandizzo. I hope that clarity will be clarified as soon as possible on the dynamics of the accident and on the causes of the tragedy, trusting in the work of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the competent Authorities on rigor and maximum speed". This was stated by Salvatore Deidda , Fdi, president of the Transport Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

In the meantime, the Ivrea public prosecutor's office has opened a file for manslaughter and multiple manslaughter . At the moment the file is in charge of unknown persons.
