The agreement for the use of SPID has been renewed for another five years. The aim is to ensure the use of this important digital identity tool for the foreseeable future, although the renewal opens up the possibility of " introducing a market-based economic valorization of the user base , a possibility already pursued for some time under the previous agreement and only recently pursued by some operators."
This is because the parties (Assocertificatori, the Agency for Digital Italy-AgID, and the Department for Digital Transformation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers) reiterated the need to ensure, "in all permitted ways, the economic and operational sustainability of the service, considering the significant investments independently made by the Operators over the ten years of providing the SPID service and the significant costs that its maintenance continues to entail , to guarantee secure and continuous access to digital services for citizens, public administrations, professionals, and Italian companies, as well as the operators' ongoing commitment to offering assistance and disseminating the service."
Some providers, such as Aruba, Infocert, and Register.it, have already introduced a paid service . Poste Italiane remains free for now, but this may not always be the case.
In announcing the agreement, Assocertificatori notes that in 2025, SPID recorded a further increase in identities issued compared to 2024, with over 52,000 new identities issued weekly and over 630 million accesses in the first half of 2025 alone.
According to the latest estimates from the Digital Identity Observatory at the Polytechnic University of Milan, the percentage of the active Italian internet population using it has reached 89%, while 86% of users use it multiple times a year, a significant record in Europe. To date, 41 million citizens have actively chosen to adopt it, creating more than 1.2 billion authentications in 2024 to access digital services from public administrations and private companies.
