Historic condemnation of the Labor Court of Bologna.
The Ministry of Education will have to compensate the family of Olga Mariasofia D'Emilio, the teacher who died in 2017 of mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos in the school where she worked, and pay 930,258 euros.
This was reported by Ona (National Asbestos Observatory) which specifies that this is the first sentence of the ministry for the presence of asbestos in schools.
It was May 17, 2002 when the teacher was diagnosed with mesothelioma due to exposure to killer fiber while working in the facilities and chemistry and physics laboratories of the Farini Middle School in Bologna. He died on February 21, 2017.
The professor had obtained from Inail the recognition of an occupational disease, and in 2007 she had started the judicial procedure to obtain compensation for damages. After his death, his children, Andrea and Silvana, turned to the National Asbestos Observatory to obtain protection for their rights. The association was formed with the lawyers Ezio Bonanni and Massimiliano Fabiani. The action will now continue "for the compensation of the damages suffered by the orphans directly for the illness and death of their relative".
"The case of Professor D'Emilio is not isolated, asbestos in schools is causing a real epidemic among teachers and non-teachers - says Ezio Bonanni, president of Ona - in fact, dozens and well over 91 cases registered by the VI report mesotheliomas, they died of this very rare neoplasm, which is the tip of the iceberg for asbestos diseases. For this reason, we insist that the Ministry of Health, in agreement with the Miur, order as soon as possible the reclamation and mass in the safety of all schools ".
"My dream is to ensure that the sufferings of my mother, and of my family, are not repeated for other teachers and employees in the school - adds Silvana Valensin, daughter of the missing teacher -. Mesothelioma is a scourge and we must win our battle against asbestos. I hope that all schools and contaminated sites will be reclaimed as soon as possible ".
