There was already a lot of talk about it at the G7 Tourism last month in Florence, even with protests, and now, in the hot world of short-term rentals, comes the crackdown on the increasingly used keyboxes and keypads, used to allow tourists to proceed with self check-in when they arrive at an apartment, without the presence of the manager.

With a new circular, the Ministry of the Interior clarifies that the automated remote identification of guests of accommodation facilities does not meet the requirements set by law, reiterating the obligation of managers to provide accommodation exclusively to people with an identity document and to communicate the personal details of the guests to the territorially competent police headquarters, within the following 24 hours.

In particular, the Ministry of the Interior emphasizes, "in light of the intensification of the phenomenon of short-term rentals throughout the country, linked to the numerous political, cultural and religious events scheduled in the country", also in view of the Jubilee celebrations, which according to estimates will bring 30-35 million tourists to Italy, and "taking into account the evolution of the difficult international situation, the need to implement stringent measures aimed at preventing risks to public order and safety in relation to the possible accommodation of dangerous people or those linked to criminal or terrorist organizations" emerges .

The circular states that "the automated management of check-in and entry into the facility, without visual identification of guests", does not exclude the risk that "after sending the documents electronically, the facility may be occupied by one or more individuals whose personal details remain unknown to the competent Police Headquarters, posing a potential danger to the safety of the community".

Minister Piantedosi explained: « I believe that it is a model that must be overcome because it is very critical also in terms of compliance with the legislation that imposes effective recognition of the person who then accesses the hotel service»

And he recalled that "there are episodes that demonstrate that it is used to evade the complete application of the law".
