A 48-year-old was killed by a gunshot on the Pantano di Riposto seafront, in the Catania area. It was inside a car. In another area of the same country, a second 50-year-old woman was found seriously injured, also shot, and died shortly after. Rescue efforts proved futile.

The victims are Carmelina Marino and Santa Castorina. Investigations are underway to clarify what happened: the link between the two episodes of blood is a man - Salvatore La Motta, known as Turi, 63 years old, who allegedly had an extramarital affair with the first victim, and who opened fire against both. His lifeless body was found near the police station: he committed suicide , with the same weapon used to kill the two women.

La Motta was a life sentence on award license: convicted of mafia association and of a murder committed before 2000, he was detained in a semi-freedom regime. He worked during the day and returned to prison in the evening. Today was the last day of a one-week bonus leave.

He was also the brother of Benedetto La Motta, known as "Benito" or "Baffo", arrested by soldiers of the Arma in July 2020 as part of an investigation into a murder and indicated as the contact person in Riposto for the "family" Santapaola-Ercolano mafia.
