Here we are. There are only a few days left and from January 1st the almost total ban on smoking outdoors will start in Milan . In fact, the new phase of the Air Quality Regulation approved in 2020 by the city council will start at the beginning of 2025.

Cigarettes are banned "in all public areas or for public use outdoors" unless it is possible to maintain a distance of 10 metres from other people .

The plan to reduce air pollution has been in force since 2021 in some specific areas: public transport stops, parks and green areas, cemeteries and sports facilities.

From 1 January 2025, explains the Municipality, " the smoking ban in the city will be extended to all public or publicly used outdoor areas, including streets and roads, with the exception of isolated areas where it is possible to respect the distance of 10 meters from other people ."

The ban only concerns tobacco products, while the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) is permitted . This second step "is first and foremost an awareness-raising action that aims to discourage lifestyles that we know are harmful to the health of all people, not just smokers - explains the Councilor for the Environment and Green Elena Grandi -. Cigarette smoke, according to data from Arpa Lombardia, is in fact responsible for 7% of fine dust emissions ".

He then continues, speaking of a provision "that aims to be a concrete action that will benefit everyone, in terms of personal health and general well-being".

"The behavior of individuals - the councilor emphasizes - can make a difference and contribute to improving the air quality of our city, therefore, as a smoker, I will be the first to change my habits : I am aware that enforcing this provision will not be simple or immediate, but I am also convinced that it will be a tool to start a real cultural change".
