Quiet night for the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, hospitalized yesterday at Santo Spirito in Rome for a scheduled pacemaker implantation.

The head of state is totally asymptomatic and in stable clinical conditions, health workers say.

Yesterday, after completing his scheduled commitments (around 6 pm he met with the President of Montenegro Milojko Spajić), he underwent surgery which was performed at 8 pm. After the operation he returned to the cardiology department.

Sergio Mattarella will turn 84 in July and is in his tenth year at the Colle, it is clear that any information regarding his health is extremely sensitive. It is likely that, together with his trusted doctors, he has been experiencing heart problems for a few days and that after a further consultation it was decided to speed up the process. Probably also the break for the Easter holidays may have determined the choice to use this window for the intervention.

The reaction of the political world was immediate, and once the initial moments of alarm had passed, a flood of good wishes for a speedy recovery was poured out. Among the first was the President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa: «Come on President, come back soon. We are waiting for you», he wrote. Good wishes were added by those of the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni («My heartfelt wishes to President Mattarella for a speedy and full recovery. Italy awaits him soon, with the strength and dedication of always»), the President of the Chamber Lorenzo Fontana, and also the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda, the good wishes of Matteo Renzi, Giuseppe Conte, of the PD with Chiara Braga and of Riccardo Magi.

President Mattarella has many commitments for the next few weeks: from the Quirinale agenda we see that the first is already next April 23rd when he will have to meet the representatives of the Combatant and Armed Forces Associations , on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. But above all at the Quirinale the date of April 25th for the Liberation Day is circled in red. The head of state is expected this year in Genoa.
