«The hope is that Russia will return to play a significant role in respect of the sovereignty of each State, it is a hope that I have always expressed in respect of the law and the Charter of the United Nations».
At the end of talks with Montenegrin President Yakov Milatovic, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella responded to Moscow's threats following his speech at the University of Marseille on February 5, in which he compared Russia to the Nazi Third Reich for its attack on Ukraine.
"The world we would like is one that respects international law," said the Head of State. "For the respect due to the free press. For three years now, Italy's position that I have always expressed has been clear, limpid, and very clear: that of respect for international law and the sovereignty of every State. This firm, vigorous affirmation has been the basis of the support that Italy has assured to Ukraine. A position always accompanied by the hope that Russia will return to play its role in the international community."
And again: «The hope is that a just peace will be reached in Ukraine and that it is not fictitious or fragile» . On NATO «it was born decades ago, it has a robust history and there is nothing that can undermine this bond, I have no fear. There is no danger that it could be undermined». «Democracy is freedom, equality and rights – the conclusion - Democracy must be constantly consolidated to allow prospects to the communities that adopt them . The EU is a set of these values with a common future that eliminates oppositions».
