This is the sentence imposed by the Court of Assizes of Lecce on Giuseppe Mariano , 82 years old, agricultural entrepreneur from Porto Cesareo, and Mohamed Elsalih , 42 years old originally from Sudan, mediator for the arrivals of farm laborers in Salento.
He was accused of enslavement and manslaughter for the death of Mohammed Abdullah , a 47-year-old Sudanese farmhand, who died following an illness in the early afternoon of 20 July 2015 in the countryside between Nardò and Avetrana, in Salento, while picking tomatoes in a day with torrid heat, with the temperature close to 40 degrees .
