Tensions are still high in the Sanremo prison of Villa Armea. Yesterday around 9 pm, in protest, some inmates set fire to some furnishings inside the cells, creating a large cloud of smoke that engulfed the three sections of the prison. Thanks to the intervention of the prison police personnel of the barracks who were off duty, the approximately 140 inmates were evacuated and relocated inside the passage area . This was reported by Fabio Pagani, secretary of UilPa Penitenziaria.
"We reiterate that effective and immediate measures are needed, starting with the deflation of prison density, the strengthening of the Penitentiary Police and the insurance of health and psychiatric assistance", Pagani denounces. " The prison of Sanremo risks collapse at any moment . We would also be curious to know what happened to the measures announced by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, the day after the conversion of the useless prison decree, when he had anticipated that he would also ask for a meeting with President Mattarella. After two years, the working conditions of the Penitentiary Police have further worsened. Therefore, the Prime Minister should know, under her Government the conditions of the prisons and of work for the agents are even more unworthy than in the past for a civilized 'nation'".
Meanwhile, an Italian prisoner in Genoa jail for robbery yesterday climbed up the crucifix on the inside wall of the prison and reached the fourth floor, threatening to throw himself into the void . The prison police raised the alarm while the ground floor became a stretch of mattresses to avoid the worst. The fire brigade was also called to the scene. The prison police began negotiations with the prisoner that went on for over two hours and in the end the man was convinced to come down.
