The Garlasco case returns to the courtroom in Pavia to discuss Denise Albani's expert report. Ninety pages in which the geneticist analyzes DNA extracted from two fingernails of Chiara Poggi, the 26-year-old murdered 18 years ago in her home. And the battle is already underway between the parties, with the lawyers and consultants of Andrea Sempio, the friend of the victim's brother, the only suspect in the new investigation for complicity in murder, ready to defend his innocence .
"I'm very happy that this DNA thing has finally arrived; it's been a huge burden these past few months," commented the 37-year-old, who met with his lawyers in Rome yesterday to finalize the strategy. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning, December 18th. Before investigating judge Daniela Garlaschelli, the experts will discuss the findings of the expert report, which found that the male DNA extracted from Chiara's fingernails is compatible with that of Sempio, or members of his paternal family line.
This compatibility, however, cannot be characterized by absolute scientific certainty, because it is based on documentary data, that of the expert De Stefano's work in 2014, which is "not consolidated." "I see a lot of interpretations that are a bit far-fetched, a bit as if someone wanted to see harm at all costs. To me, it seemed like a very clear expert report that ironed out a lot of issues. So I'm glad it's finally here," Sempio exudes confidence in his latest interview on Quarto Grado, on Retequattro, reiterating his intention not to be questioned until the investigation is concluded.
"That's what my lawyers advised me, and I trust them..." Lawyers and consultants are also preparing questions to seek clarification from the expert during the hearing . The possibility remains that the preliminary investigation will not be concluded on Thursday, but will be extended to the now-infamous fingerprint 33, found on a wall of the stairs leading to the basement of the house on Via Pascoli and attributed by investigators to the 37-year-old accused of the murder in conjunction with others. Interested spectators include the lawyers of Alberto Stasi, Chiara Poggi's boyfriend at the time of the crime, who is currently serving a final 16-year prison sentence for the crime.
The Poggi family, however, continues to express skepticism, through their lawyer Gianluigi Tizzoni, claiming the new analyses offer no real breakthroughs and risk fueling what they consider unwarranted media coverage. Criminologist Dario Redaelli, the family's consultant, has revealed, however, that he has investigated the items Chiara was wearing on the day she was murdered.
A necklace with a shark tooth pendant, several bracelets, one bearing the name 'Chiara,' the watch, and the anklet. "They were preserved as if they were relics, along with everything else that had to do with that girl that day," he explains. "Some of these objects have not been analyzed, and they are of interest to us now."
