A surprise move by the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office, which has summoned Andrea Sempio, the 38-year-old under investigation in the new inquiry into the murder of Chiara Poggi in Garlasco, for Wednesday 6 May .
Sempio will have to appear before the magistrates at 10 am, essentially a last call before the definitive closure of the investigation which should precede the request for indictment .
The summons contains an important new development: the Prosecutor's Office has amended the charge to voluntary homicide, removing the part regarding conspiracy with unknown persons or with Alberto Stasi. The crime is now being charged only to the 38-year-old, who, according to investigators, acted alone .
A year ago, on May 20th, Sempio was summoned to the Prosecutor's Office. That day, investigators had prepared a separate interrogation session with him and Stasi: Stasi showed up, but Sempio didn't, exploiting a procedural flaw in the summons . His lawyer, Angela Taccia, claimed responsibility for this decision with two social media posts that were censored by the Order ("War hard without fear" and "CPP we love you").
At the time, investigators wanted to challenge him on the results of the new RIS report on fingerprint 33, the hand on the wall of the stairs leading to the cellar where Chiara's body was found. This fingerprint had been rejected in 2007 but was later reevaluated and attributed to Sempio .
Now, a year has passed, and many things have changed. The lengthy preliminary investigation revealed the compatibility of Sempio's DNA under Chiara Poggi's fingernails, ruling out Stasi's . Further consultations have also led to a review of the probable time of the crime and other factors that had previously influenced Stasi's conviction. And there are further documents that will only be uncovered with the notice of conclusion of the investigation or during the interrogation on May 6th.
The reason for this summons is unclear, but what is certain is that it is Sempio's last call before the new investigation into the Garlasco crime is concluded.
Lawyer Angela Taccia commented on the summons, implying that the suspect may exercise his right to remain silent : "We are evaluating the most appropriate steps for our defense strategy, taking into account the fact that for the second time since the beginning of the investigation, Andrea has been summoned, but without the investigative documents having been filed."
