"Children should only have their mother's surname." This is the proposal that former minister and Democratic Party senator Dario Franceschini will present to the Senate.
According to what we learn, Franceschini anticipated it this morning at the group's assembly, which was discussing the proposed laws on double surnames. "Instead of creating endless problems with the management of double surnames or with the choice between the father's and the mother's - is Franceschini's reasoning - after centuries in which children have taken the father's surname, we establish that from the new law they will take only the mother's surname. It is a simple thing and also compensation for a centuries-old injustice that has had not only a symbolic value, but has been one of the cultural and social sources of gender inequality".
Franceschini's proposal triggered immediate political reactions. For Laura Boldrini (PD), her colleague's is a "welcome" request to "restore to women the equality that has been denied for too long , even in the parental sphere and in the attribution of the surname". And also for the group leader of Avs Laura Zanella it is an "interesting and shareable" idea.
The center-right has a different opinion. "Here are the great priorities of the Italian left : instead of double surnames, take away the father's surname from children!", the polemical comment of the secretary of the League Matteo Salvini , while for the deputy of Fratelli d'Italia Federico Mollicone that of Franceschini "should be considered an unacceptable provocation".
