The Regional Organic District "Sardegna Bio" is the best organic district in Europe for 2026. This was announced on European Organic Farming Day by the European Union and specifically by the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Copa-Cogeca, and IFOAM Organics Europe, which awarded the Sardinian Foundation one of the 7 EU Organic Awards up for grabs this year.
This award, established in 2022, is the first recognition given to organic production in the European Union, following up on the Action Plan for the Development of Organic Production adopted by the Commission on March 25, 2021. This year's award ceremony featured seven categories, each with three finalists. The Sardinian District, the only Italian organic district in the final, competed alongside Alto Tâmega e Barroso da Chaves from Portugal and Pla de Manlleu from Spain.
This success rewards years of hard work, networking, and a commitment to providing a unified voice for the island's organic sector, which continues to grow in both production and consumption, and has led the Sardinia Region to sixth place in Italy for organic farmland.
Accepting the award during the ceremony held this morning in Brussels at the Charlemagne Building was Andrea Campurra, president of the Regional Organic District "Sardegna Bio," along with Giorgio Demurtas, vice president of the District and president of Coldiretti Cagliari, the organization that sponsored and supported the foundation's creation from its inception in 2020, and its director Aldo Buiani. The Regional Organic District "Sardegna Bio" is the largest in Italy, and its president, Campurra, is also president of the National Network of Italian Organic Districts.

"The strength of this District," Campurra commented, "is that it has given a home to those who have always, with great sacrifice, believed in organic farming in Sardinia. We work as a team and participate in trade fairs, including international ones, such as the recent Fine Food event in Melbourne. We are working on numerous projects with various partners, including the Regional Department of Agriculture, which has always believed in us. Our planning is long-term, with ambitious projects that enhance organic supply chains, our Sardinia, and our future. For example, we aim to ensure certified, high-quality organic food in school cafeterias. Ours is a large family that has now been able to make its voice heard in Europe, where we make a significant contribution to achieving the goals of the Green Deal, and specifically the Action Plan for the Development of Organic Production. The Award is a recognition that goes directly to all the companies we support."

Satisfaction was also expressed by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, specifically by Francesco Agus, Councilor for Agriculture and Agro-Pastoral Reform. He emphasized that this recognition represents "a great achievement for Sardinia," Agus emphasized, "and for our producers. It recognizes the commitment to organic farming that Sardinian agriculture and the Region are making together. This result encourages us to continue on this path."

Giorgio Demurtas, as Coldiretti Sardegna, a founding member of the Foundation, expressed his satisfaction for "having immediately believed in this highly ambitious project for Sardinian organic produce. We are very proud to have brought to Brussels a successful Sardinian model that has successfully created synergies between companies in the primary and agri-food processing sectors, giving value and dignity to the work of our farmers. Organic farming, in addition to its vital health and biodiversity benefits, also represents a form of resilience that helps us better overcome the challenges of climate change. At our Campagna Amica markets, organic products are increasingly in demand and appreciated, and the regional organic district "Sardegna Bio" with its stand has become a true point of reference for consumers over the years."

Of all the competing categories, the “Sardegna Bio” Regional Organic District was the only one, along with the city of Turin (which competed in the “Best Organic City” category), to represent Italy.
