A fire caused one victim inside the “Fratelli Parlapiano” hospital in Ribera, in the Agrigento area.

The fire broke out in the evening, after the alarm was raised at 118, firefighters from the Sciacca detachment intervened first, then other teams from Santa Margherita Belice and Agrigento.

The victim himself started the flames with a cigarette. The patient found dead, a 53-year-old Romanian resident in the Agrigento area, removed his mask and lit his cigarette during an oxygen therapy session to which he was undergoing, causing the machine that supplied the oxygen to explode.

The flames broke out between the Medicine and Cardiology departments and then spread to a hospital room on the first floor. And as firefighters evacuated patients and staff and worked to put out the flames, they found the trapped patient. They tried to save him, but unfortunately they couldn't, when they managed to enter the room he was already dead.
