The Trieste Network, that is, the network of about a thousand bipartisan Catholic local administrators born on the sidelines of the Trieste Social Week of 2024, launches an appeal in favor of the end of hostilities in Gaza, and proposes a fast on Monday 26 May, in support of Pope Leo's appeal.
"It is impossible to continue to passively witness what is one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies in recent history," reads the text released by the Network coordinator, Francesco Russo. "It is culpable to resign ourselves in the face of so much innocent suffering. Because nothing can really justify what is happening. We join Pope Leo's heartfelt appeal to allow the entry of dignified humanitarian aid and to put an end to the hostilities, whose excruciating price is paid by children, the elderly, and the sick."
The Catholic administrators of the Trieste Network therefore propose to their "colleagues" and to "all men and women of good will" a day of fasting for next Monday, May 26.
«It is also an appeal to our Government and Parliament so that politics - without distinction - works in all places and with all possible tools to bring to an end as soon as possible the horrors that have been under the eyes of the whole world for months».
In addition to Francesco Russo, vice president of the Regional Council of Friuli, the signatories also include Alberto Detoni, mayor of Udine, Giacomo Possamai, mayor of Vicenza, Anna Maria Bigon, regional councilor of Veneto, Monica Canalis, regional councilor of Piedmont, Debora Ciliento, regional councilor of Puglia, Roberta Gaeta, regional councilor of Campania, Margherita La Rocxa Ruvolo, regional councilor of Sicily, Aldo Salaris, vice president of the Regional Council of Sardinia, Giuseppe Irace, Secretary for People and the Community, Argia Albanese, President of Mppu.
Francesco Russo, coordinator of the Network, adds: «we would like that from our cities and our territories that spirit of peace and that prophetic voice that made Giorgio La Pira dream of "a system of bridges, scientific, technical, economic, commercial, urban, political, social, cultural and spiritual that unites cities to unite nations" would rise».
