The plane carrying the American president Joe Biden and the first lady Jill landed in the night in Fiumicino then, with a large deployment of law enforcement agencies, the couple boarded a car that left the airport direct to Rome.

Biden, on his first visit to the capital after the election to the White House, today meets the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Pope Francis.

On the China front, President Xi Jinping will not be present but will take part in the summit via video link. Among the objectives of the summit, as announced by the president of the EU commission Ursula von der Lyen, "to find an agreement on a global tax reform for a fair recovery after the pandemic".
