The Verona Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case against the three Carabinieri commanders responsible for the clearing operation at the Ramponi brothers' farmhouse in Castel D'Azzano, Verona, where three soldiers died in an explosion on October 14, 2025.

The commander of the Villafranca company, Vincenzo Spataro, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Sframeli, then commander of the operational unit, and Colonel Claudio Papagno, provincial commander of the Verona Carabinieri, are accused of multiple manslaughter.

The three Carabinieri are also subject to disciplinary proceedings opened by the Attorney General's Office for alleged negligence in the planning and management of the raid on the Ramponi farmhouse.

In the first hearing before a Disciplinary Committee, held this morning, the defense lawyers requested a suspension of proceedings precisely because they learned of the Verona Prosecutor's Office's investigation. The Prosecutor General's Office opposed this request, and the panel's president reserved his decision. The proceedings were adjourned until January 15th.

Last Monday, the trial for massacre against the brothers Franco, Dino, and Maria Luisa Ramponi began before the Verona Assize Court.

The Carabinieri had gone to the Ramponis' farmhouse to conduct a search prior to the eviction, but the place was saturated with gas and filled with Molotov cocktails and canisters. According to the investigation, Maria Luisa triggered the explosion by throwing a lighter onto the gasoline-covered floor. The previous year, the Ramponi brothers had attempted to prevent the eviction of their farmhouse on several occasions by barricading themselves on the roof and threatening to blow up the structure.
