CasaPound march shakes Bologna: antagonists protest, clashes with police
The contact on the Pincio steps, Schlein: «A mistake to have the extreme right demonstrate a few meters from the station, it is still an open wound»Firecrackers and liquids were thrown from the windows of buildings in the center of Bologna as the Patriots and CasaPound march passed by, which this afternoon set off from via Gramsci toward piazza XX Settembre. Several hundred people participated in the demonstration, which was highly contested in Bologna.
And there were clashes between the demonstrators of the anti-fascist march, organized to ask that "the fascists leave Bologna" and the police, in riot gear, on the Pincio steps. The group had quickly reached via Indipendenza, going along via Irnerio, to reach the nearby area where the Casapound group is located.
At a certain point, many from the opposing procession headed with their faces covered towards the Montagnola park up to the steps where there was contact with the police. Smoke bombs and firecrackers were thrown.
Under the steps was the Casapound procession, with tricolor flags and the far-right political movement, divided by a police cordon in Piazza XX Settembre and a construction site. After the clashes between demonstrators and the police who tried to block the descent of the anti-fascist collectives from the Pincio steps, the situation returned to relative calm. Some minor injuries among the antagonists, hit during the clashes.
In addition to the protest march that started from Piazza Nettuno, there was a second front of protests in Bologna against the demonstration of CasaPound Rete dei Patrioti. About 200 anarchists from Piazza dell'Unità, explains the Police Headquarters, began an unannounced march arriving on the Matteotti bridge where they found the blockade created by the State Police units "whose position was necessary to prevent any contact with the protesters of the Rete dei Patrioti gathered in Piazza XX Settembre". There were no clashes and the protesters went back.
"As a Bolognese , I don't think it was the right choice to have the extreme right demonstrate a few meters from the Bologna station , which is still an open wound for all of us and for the entire country, for which the families of the victims of the massacre had to fight for forty years to reach sentences, which also clarify the responsibilities of the extreme right", said the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein , in Bologna for the picket in Piazza Nettuno against the demonstration. "A mistake", she added.
