A Rome court has sentenced the Carabiniere to three years in prison for killing a 56-year-old Syrian thief in the EUR district in September 2020.

The Carabinieri officer was charged with negligent excessive use of weapons. The incident occurred during an attempted robbery at an office in the capital. According to the prosecution, the defendant, who was serving in the Mobile Radio Unit at the time of the incident, responded to a report of a break-in at an office on Via Paolo Di Dono .

Once he left the building, the two Carabinieri allegedly ordered the 56-year-old to stop, but he responded by hitting the defendant's colleague in the torso with a screwdriver, then attempting to flee. At that point, the Carabinieri officer on trial fired two gunshots, one of which hit the Syrian national, killing him.
