«At the end of the meeting on 27-28 October last, the Major Risks Commission informed us that we must prepare for the possible need to quickly move towards a higher alert level than yellow» in the Campi Flegrei area.

This was said by the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci, during a hearing at the Environment Commission on the bradyseismic phenomenon that is affecting that territory.

The minister explained, citing the commission, that «the set of scientific results strengthens the evidence of the involvement of magma in the current bradyseismic process of ground uplift ».

“We have already defined a perimeter of the red zone and today I will talk about it with the mayors,” he added. «After having defined the perimeter, the government will move on to the executive phase which is to ascertain the vulnerability of the buildings within the red zone ».

The red zone «is the one to be evacuated immediately in the event of an eruption and includes around half a million people. The yellow zone is where people are exposed to significant ash fallout and includes 800 thousand people."

«Without hesitation and omissions, the population must be constantly informed of the risk exposures of the territory in which they live », he said again. «In this perspective of uncertainty – the conclusion – I can only express one hope: when we plan the development of the territories we invest resources in works, infrastructures, houses, companies, we always try not to forget about the risk, rather we try to start from the risk to guide our choices towards suitable areas and territories. We cannot continue with a development model that deludes itself into asking nature to adapt to the choices of men ."
