The captain of the Bayesian, James Cutfield, the sailing vessel that sank last Monday in Porticello, near Palermo, is being investigated for shipwreck and multiple manslaughter. Seven people lost their lives in the accident.

On Sunday, Cutfield was heard (for the second time) for two hours by the magistrates of the Termini Imerese prosecutor's office, as a "person informed of the facts" before being entered in the register of suspects.

The 50-year-old New Zealander had to explain how a sailing ship considered unsinkable could sink, given that – according to experts – if all the hatches had been closed, even in extreme weather conditions, no tragedy would have occurred. So the prosecutor's office continues to dig into the errors of the shipwreck and is working hard to identify the suspects, also in view of the upcoming autopsies.
