In the field, intended for cultivation for personal needs, the military found flowers ranging in height from 30 to 120 centimeters , from whose drying or incision of the capsules it is possible to obtain morphine , papaverine , codeine , opium and – after laboratory treatments – also heroin .
Examinations carried out after the discovery of the yellow flames revealed that the bulbs had significant levels of morphine.
