The Arezzo civil court has ordered Alessandro Albertoni and Luca Vanneschi to pay over one million euros in compensation to the parents of Martina Rossi, the 20-year-old student from Genoa who died on August 3, 2011, after falling from a hotel balcony in Palma de Mallorca while, according to the final criminal ruling, attempting to escape an attempted sexual assault. The Corriere di Arezzo reports.

The ruling by civil judge Fabrizio Pieschi, filed yesterday, establishes compensation of €489,836 to the mother, Franca Murialdo, €457,563 to the father, Bruno Rossi, and another €74,531 to be paid jointly to the two parents for financial damages and attempted rape.

Albertoni and Vanneschi had been definitively sentenced to three years in prison for attempted sexual assault against Martina Rossi. The civil judge ruled that, although the crime of "death resulting from another crime" had been declared statute-barred in criminal proceedings, the civil trial had established it, according to the "more probable than not" civil law criterion, ruling out contributory negligence on the part of the victim . The sentence is immediately enforceable but is subject to appeal. Albertoni and Vanneschi's lawyers, who have always denied the charges, can request a stay of execution.

"This sentence is the natural consequence of the criminal conviction," commented Martina's father, Bruno Rossi, today. "So far, Albertoni and Vanneschi have never contacted us or apologized; they have only paid a thousand euros into a dedicated fund . Our punishment, however, never ends."
