Luigi Di Maio will soon be the new EU Special Envoy to the Persian Gulf countries .

The former Foreign Minister, after his defeat in the last general elections with Civic Engagement , is running for the appointment of the new figure strongly desired by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.

Also in the running for the job are Dimitris Avramopoulos, Jan Kubis, who in the past served as UN envoy to Libya, and the candidate from Cyprus, Markos Kyprianou . But Di Maio is the favourite, according to the evaluations of the panel of experts who were asked to express themselves.

Among the most important tasks it will have will be to pave the way for gas and energy purchase contracts for member states with local suppliers . Much of the work will be done to establish solid relationships for oil supplies, which remains one of the most important markets for the production and social supply chains of the nations that are part of the European Union.

The path will not be short because the process consists of several steps . The initial one was Borrell's invitation to member states to send him their preferences for nominations. Then Coreper is activated, where ambassadors and experts also sit, which sends an opinion on the personalities in the running that the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy receives and summarizes to then forward the dossier to the EU Council. The only body that has decision-making power, of which the European nations are part. In the event that there is no unanimity, a qualified majority vote is envisaged.
