A 10-year-old girl, a second generation immigrant, showed up at school in Pordenone dressed in the niqab , one of the most fundamentalist veils, which covers the woman's entire body, leaving only a slit for the eyes .

The school has started investigations into the case and the school principals have been informed. In the meantime, the teacher asked and obtained that the little girl return to class with her face uncovered. So the little girl, who was born in Italy to a Muslim family of African origin and attends fourth grade, went to class the next day not wearing the niqab top .

The case reached the Senate with the complaint from the senator and secretary of the League in Friuli Marco Dreosto : «It is unacceptable to force a 10 year old girl to go to school with her entire face covered, it contravenes the most basic rules of common life, of rights fundamentals of children and female identity. Religious freedom is one thing, fundamentalism imposed on innocent girls is another ."

«After this and other cases, I think the time has come for Italy to also take initiatives to ban the niqab at school and in public places, to respect women's rights and for public safety . I remember how France and Belgium banned the niqab in public places and even Egypt, a Muslim country, banned its use in school. I will present an initiative in Parliament in this sense as soon as possible", concludes the parliamentarian. The use of the niqab in public offices has also been banned in Denmark and the Quebec region of Canada.
