Gabriele Gravina has resigned as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), two days after Italy's defeat in Bosnia, which saw them fail to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive year . He made the announcement at the start of the extraordinary Federal Council meeting, convened this afternoon in Rome and starting shortly after 2:30 PM, after he refused to immediately step back at a press conference in Zenica on Tuesday night (his statements were strongly contested by the sports world and beyond). Elections are scheduled for June 22nd.
Gravina, 72, was elected on October 22, 2018 (almost a year after Italy's first World Cup qualification failure, which led to the resignation of the previous federal president Carlo Tavecchio) and re-elected on February 22, 2021 and again on February 3, 2025, in the latter case with 98.68% of the vote.
Today's Federal Council meeting is a preview of the actual meeting, which will take place after Easter. In the two days since Italy's elimination, many have called for Gravina's resignation, starting with Sports Minister Andrea Abodi . Also on the table are the positions of coach Gennaro Gattuso and delegation leader Gianluigi Buffon.
