Following the announcement by the Region of a new prevention path in view of the possible invasion of grasshoppers, the CIA Agricoltori Sardegna has raised the alarm on the emergency that could soon hit fields and agricultural productions in central Sardinia.

"A phenomenon should be tackled in a very different way by the Region", the trade association said, "the invasions of recent years, which have heavily undermined the holding of farms with the devastation of pastures and crops, have highlighted a continuous expansion of the presence of grasshoppers, investing more and more territories of our island ".

Yesterday the Regional Council announced the allocation of 800 thousand euros (500 thousand for 2021, 200 thousand for 2022 and 100 thousand for 2023) for the planning and implementation of measures to contain and combat the spread of the phenomenon, plus 300 thousand euros for the preparation of a Plan for the activities of study, monitoring, prevention and contrast to the spread of the phenomenon and to support the activities: despite this, "as of today, this plan and the consequent prevention actions have not yet started", the representatives of farmers.

"Furthermore, the funds allocated are absolutely insufficient to effectively combat the phenomenon, both in terms of prevention and management, and today the farmers who have suffered losses and damage in recent years have not received any relief", the CIA attacks again.

Finally, the trade association asks the Region to "promptly initiate the prevention plan, intervening with the utmost speed to deal decisively and concretely with a problem that has not been given due attention in recent years".
