Sanctions for traders and professionals (doctors, lawyers, taxi drivers, etc.) who refuse payments of any amount with debit, credit and prepaid cards.
The Recovery Decree establishes it, which establishes a minimum penalty of 30 euros, increased by 4% of the value of the transaction.
Although the obligation to accept these payments had already been established by the Monti government, until now sanctions had not yet been introduced in case of non-compliance with the rule.
It seems that the consumer himself will have to report the merchant who refuses the use of the POS; then an inspection by the police will be needed, who will be able to impose the sanction.
The provision will enter into force from January 1, 2023 ( a first version of the amendment had assumed January 2022).
The measure represents a further tightening by the government on the use of cash and an incentive to increase the use of traceable payment instruments, in order to favor the emergence of the underground economy and stimulate technological development by modernizing society and the economy.
It is added to the reduction of the limit on cash payments to one thousand euros , effective from January 1st.
