Sardinia trembles because of the duties, it is the Italian region that depends most on US purchases, thanks to Pecorino Romano. Almost half of the agri-food products of the Island, 48% to be precise, ends up in the United States .
The data emerges from the CIA report on the possible repercussions of the trade war unleashed by Trump. Sardinia's total exports in 2024 were 288 million euros, over 138 of which in the States . If in absolute numbers it sells less than other regions, in percentage terms the impact can be devastating, because Sardinia's dependence on the US market is very strong .
The situation is particularly worrying in the provinces of Nuoro and Sassari, from which 66% and 65% of agri-food production leaves for the USA . These are the most exposed Italian provinces behind Grosseto (71%). And for both, the determining factor is always that of Pecorino Romano. Southern Sardinia is also very exposed, where 44% of agri-food production goes to the USA, less so Oristano and Cagliari (15% and 8% respectively) .
The repercussions on the agri-food sector and on agricultural producers, in short, could be devastating, with the risk of company closures and abandonment .
« If the price of Pecorino Romano is no longer competitive, it will be
probably replaced by other American sheep cheeses - highlights the national president of Cia Cristiano Fini - causing a collapse for the economy of the provinces of the island that is supported by that supply chain. The worrying thing will be the price of milk, which could suffer immediate repercussions".
