“ Have I ever thought of leaving the leadership of the Movement? And for what reason? ".
Giuseppe Conte told reporters as he left the party headquarters.
Yesterday was the most dramatic day for the 5 Star Movement, that of Luigi Di Maio's split . While the number of parliamentarians who adhered to the Foreign Minister's project increased (there are 62, now the pentastellato group is no longer the first parliamentary group), Conte entrenched himself in silence , studying the counter-moves together with the loyalists.
A silence broken today by some brief statements. He remains at the helm of the 5 Star Movement, he clarified. And he will also continue to support the Draghi government , which at least for now "is not up for discussion".
"Even yesterday, when with the resolution we asked for greater involvement of the Chambers, as is normal in any parliamentary democracy, we were put in a lot of difficulty but our support did not fail ", underlines the M5S president.
In the evening, guest of Lilli Gruber on La7, he affirms that he will not ask for Di Maio's resignation: “ I would let him ask himself with his conscience and decide, I will not ask for his resignation . I read the agencies of Di Maio's speech, I didn't understand what his political project is. The goal, he says, is to defend Euro-Atlanticism, which, however, does not seem to me that anyone is attacking it. And then support the Draghi government, but even here we are doing it in many ".
The former prime minister claims that he has never questioned Italy's international position: " I don't accept lessons on Atlanticism", is the message he sends to Luigi Di Maio.
"The Movement - concludes Conte - will remain the first political force to deal with all those issues, from social justice to ecological transition , which are part of the backbone of the 5-star movement".
A hectic day for the former premier , who will bring together the parliamentarians tonight while tomorrow it's up to Di Maio to reunite his people, also for the choice of the symbol of the new party.
