Roberto Calderoli also approves the request of the Sardinian regional councilors to review the electoral colleges for the European elections, so that only one constituency is foreseen for Sardinia.

«I agree with the request for a modification of law 18 of 1979 to provide for the establishment of the new 'Sardinia' district and to have a different definition of the electoral districts for the European elections, as it is clear that the single district with Sicily it penalizes the election of Sardinian deputies to the European Parliament », affirms the Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies.

For Calderoli it is "necessary and appropriate" for Sardinia to have its own representative in Brussels. The request was made yesterday during a meeting promoted by the president of the Insularity Commission Michele Cossa between the president of the regional council Michele Pais and the Sardinian parliamentarians.

The proposal aims to fill a clear representation gap : the Sicilian electoral body is three times higher than the Sardinian one, a disproportion that makes it almost impossible to elect a Sardinian MEP. In fact , in the last European elections all seven elected in the Islands constituency are Sicilians .
