Alessandro Deiola's goal is the best goal of the 2024/25 Serie A season: the Rossoblu midfielder was honored this evening in Milan at the "Gran Galà del Calcio"—the annual event organized by the Italian Footballers' Association that recognizes footballing excellence from the previous season—for his shot at the Unipol Domus against Venezia on May 18th: a spectacular team move that ended with a right-footed curling shot that found the top corner.
The goal—from a selection curated by the sports editorial team of Rivista Undici—was chosen by fans on the Gala's web channels, in a poll that surpassed 30,000 votes. Established in 2004, the "AIC Goal of the Year" award goes to a Cagliari player for the first time. The list of honorees includes Francesco Totti, Fabio Quagliarella, Theo Hernández, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Mauro Icardi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Maicon, Andriy Shevchenko, Marcus Thuram, Mattia Zaccagni, and Riccardo Zampagna.
"This goal captures all the beauty of football: the connection with my teammates, the fun of playing the ball. Being able to celebrate together, creating something memorable," said Alessandro Deiola from the stage during the evening broadcast live on Sky Sport. "Initially, I didn't think I'd scored such a goal, but watching it again with my teammates, we realized we'd truly achieved something beautiful. I thank the team, the organization of the award, and the fans who voted for this goal."
Alessandro's goal is also in the running for the Puskás Award, the prize FIFA gives to the player who scores the best goal of the year in world football. Along with ten other goals, it is the only one to represent Italy. The winner of the award will be chosen based on a 50/50 split between fan votes and those cast by a panel of FIFA Legends. Fans can vote and choose their favorite goal by registering on FIFA.com until December 3.
